Tone Bender MK1.5 / Tone Bender MKII
A dual Tone Bender featuring two classic Sola Sound circuits from the year 1966 - Tone Bender MK1.5 / Tone Bender MKII .
The MK1.5 is an authentic reproduction of the Sola Sound MK1.5 Tone Bender - a versatile two transistor fuzz with exceptional clean-up. The circuit is true to the original with the addition of an external bias control that modifies the clean-up and character of the fuzz.
The MKII setting is a faithful recreation of the three transistor Sola Sound MKII Tone Bender with an added gain control and 3-way voice switch. The voice switch allows the user to select from three EQ settings for a full range, mid forward, and upper mid voicing. The gain knob controls the input level / clipping for the signal being fed into the latter two transistor stages that make up the MK1.5. This circuit is true to the original MKII with the voice switch set to “full“ and the gain control at max.
CONTROLS
Volume, fuzz, and bias are shared by both circuits. The gain and EQ switch only apply in the MKII setting.
Volume
Fuzz
Bias
Gain
Voice switch (upper mid / mid / full range)
Right foot switch (MKII / MK1.5 select)
Left foot switch (bypass / engage)
TRANSISTOR OPTIONS
Two transistor options are available for this circuit. The high gain version favors an aggressive fuzz voicing where the standard is tuned for a balance of fuzz and clean-up.
Standard - a sweet and nuanced clean-up machine. This version features a lower gain trio of 60’s Texas Instruments and Mullard transistors that love to see the guitar volume rolled back. This version has a warm and natural sound that lends itself to clean-up and lower gain fuzz textures.
High gain - a hybrid pair of new old stock germanium transistors tuned for a more aggressive voicing. This version delivers a range of explosive and classic fuzz tones with plenty of singing sustain and gain.
Equipped with a standard 9V DC jack. This product uses vintage PNP transistors which require an isolated supply. <10mA current draw.
